Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery (B.A.M.S.) is undergraduate degree awarded after the study of five and a half years duration, including 1 year internship. The curriculum includes studying and teaching of modern anatomy, physiology, principles of medicine, preventive and social medicine, pharmacology, toxicology, forensic medicine, ENT, Ophthalmology, principles of surgery, etc. along with ayurvedic topics.

Dr. Pushpa Kini, the Head of the Department of Paediatrics at Kasturba Medical College, Manipal, has opined that in future there is possibility of integration of BAMS with the Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery, the "compound degree" in mainstream Western medicine in India as in most countries in the British Commonwealth.[1]

Permission to use modern medicine

A BAMS graduate can practice modern/allopathic medicine in the Indian state of Maharashtra.[2] According to the privileges in the Drugs & Cosmetics Act 1940,Rules 1945 Sec 2ee(iii), States have right to allow BAMS doctors to use modern medicine, in the practice.[3]

Future after BAMS

A BAMS doctor can work in following domains after completion of the degree.

  1. General Practice
  2. Research (Clinical research or epidemiological research)
  3. Hospital and Healthcare Administration
  4. Health Supervisor (As per High courts decision a BAMS doctor can work for the post of Health Supervisor)[4]
  5. Ayurved Consultaion
  6. Master of Public Health
  7. PG Diploma Courses


A student who has pursued BAMS is designated as Ayurvedacharya and are entitled to use the courtesy title "Doctor" upon registration as a medical practitioner with the relevant regulatory body in their respective country.[citation needed]
