Bangaon (Bengali: বনগাঁ) is a city and a municipality in North 24 Parganas district in the state of West Bengal, India. Bangaon is headquarters of Bangaon subdivision.

Geography

Bangaon is located at 23.07°N 88.82°E / 23.07; 88.82{{#coordinates:23.07|N|88.82|E||||| | |name= }}. It has an average elevation of 7 metres (22 feet). It is the last station on the Sealdah-Bangaon section of Eastern Railway, 77 km from Sealdah Station. It is part of the Kolkata Suburban Railway system. The Sealdah – Bangaon railway was built between 1882 and 1884.

Geo-political significance

Bangaon is near the border with Bangladesh. The railway route to East Bengal was established in 1884 and the Barisal Express operated passenger services till 1947. After the partition, a mixed service (passenger and goods) continued till the Indo-Pakistan war of 1965. With the creation of Bangladesh, the goods train service was reintroduced for two years from 1972 but again closed for lack of goods. India and Bangladesh signed an agreement in July last to re- establish the train link. This was in line with the initiatives of the previous BNP Government, which formed a committee in 1994 to assess the feasibility. Officials said the route would cut short 63 km compared to the Darshana-Gethe track to Dhaka and facilitate smooth traffic of 7 lakh metric tonnes of expected import-export items in a year. According to the agreement, goods train from both sides would be allowed at Benapole and Petrapole from where the Bangladesh Railway and the Indian Railway would take wagons of their counterparts to the destination.Petrapole Border is the most Profitable Border among the whole Indo-Bangladesh border. Most Business of Bangladesh come from this Border. This is Asia's largest land Port. And recently India Government has decided to transfer the port into a modern Port.

River

The Ichamati River flows past Bangaon. Ray Bridge and Rakhaldassetu connects the two sides of the town. In recent years, the river is polluted caused by draining of garbage. Now-a-days Ichamati is among one of the polluted rivers in North 24 pgs. All the wastes from Bongaon especially from hospitals and from roads are dumped directly into the river. These days the pollution has reached such levels that local swimming teachers are not able to perform their work because of the dirty water and also due to the extreme amount of hyacinth in the river. The waters of Ichamati, considered sacred among many, is still being used in many rituals, in spite of the pollution. The Kalitala in Bongaon is also sharing sprits with the river.

Demographics

In the 2011 census, Bangaon municipality had a population of 110,668, out of which 56,416 were males and 54,252 were females. The 0–6 years population was 8,452. Effective literacy rate for the 7+ population was 90.25 per cent.

As of 2001 India census, Bangaon had a population of 102,115. Males constitute 51% of the population and females 49%. Bangaon has an average literacy rate of 76%, higher than the national average of 59.5%; with 55% of the males and 45% of females literate. 10% of the population is under 6 years of age.

Municipality

The Municipality, established in 1954, is one of the old municipalities in West Bengal. Jyotsna Adhya is the present chairperson of the municipality.

Transport

National Highway No. 35, or Jessore Road goes past Bangaon to Jessore in Bangladesh. Chakdah Road State Highway No 1 connects the town with Chakdaha. Bus Routes

Area of contamination

Bangaon is one of the areas where ground water is affected by arsenic contamination.

Education

All the schools are affiliated to West Bengal Board of Secondary Education (for secondary education) and West Bengal Council of Higher Secondary Education (for higher secondary education).

Schools

Established in 1864, Bongaon High School is the oldest school in the entire region. Apart from it most notable school is Bongaon Kumudini Girls' High School. Other school includes Bongaon Kabi Keshoblal Vidyapith, Saktigarh High School, New Bongaon High School, New Bongaon Girls High School, Gauri Sundari Girls H.S. School etc. Bongaon also has other school like brilliant child, anandmargand there is another English medium school cygnet day school in kalupur bongaon

College

Dinabandhu Mahavidyalay is the only degree college in Bangaon which is currently affiliated to West Bengal State University (formerly affiliated to University of Calcutta).

Healthcare

Bangaon has a Government aided Hospital namely Dr. J. R. Dhar Sub Divisional Hospital. It has 200 beds and 30 doctors. This hospital serves the need of the people of the entire region.Other than hospital,private nursing homes are present.The city has many number of medical stores a pharmacy.

Festival

Durga Puja is the main festival of Bongaon. Bongaon's Durga Puja is the second largest after Kolkata's. Durga puja is largely celebrated. During Durga Puja the streets are only available for people who come to see the puja and for emergency services like police, paramedics, ambulance and fire depth. Some other important festivals are Kali Puja,Rathjatra etc.
