He represented the United States at the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal, Quebec, where he won a bronze medal in the men's 200-meter backstroke, finishing behind fellow Americans John Naber and Peter Rocca.[1] Harrigan studied architecture at North Carolina State University, where he swam for the NC State Wolfpack swimming and diving team in National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) competition from 1973 to 1976.
