  1. ^ Although the designation, "Histoplasma capsulatum var. duboisii," is still widely used in scientific literature, evidence for the name-change and elevation of H. duboisii to a species, comes from a genomic cladistics analysis, Kasuga, T; Taylor, JW; White, TJ (March 1999). "Phylogenetic relationships of varieties and geographical groups of the human pathogenic fungus Histoplasma capsulatum Darling". J Clin Microbiol 37 (3): 653–663. PMC 84508. 2. ^ Further support for the name-change comes from quantitative analysis of the gene expression products; "All the strains of H. capsulatum var. capsulatum RFLP classes II and III were grouped into two distinct clusters: the heterogenic RFLP class I formed a large, but also well-defined group, whereas the outgroup strains of H. capsulatum var. duboisii, B. dermatitidis, P. brasiliensis and S. schenckii were shifted away."
