IBM Research – Africa

IBM Research – Africa is one of twelve research laboratories comprising IBM Research.[1] Located at the Catholic University of Eastern Africa in Nairobi,[2] it opened on November 7, 2013. It is the first commercial technology research facility on the African continent conducting both applied and far-reaching exploratory research.[3]

The lab is directed by Chief Scientist Osamuyimen Stewart, who oversees a research staff of 25, 21 of which have either PHDs or Masters’ degrees from such globally-recognised institutions as Oxford, Cambridge, Harvard, and Stanford.[4]

Said Sheree Hanna, African Business Review technology writer: "Scientists at IBM’s Africa Research Lab are on a mission to rise to the unique challenges that the continent has and find smart solutions that will ultimately benefit the population in some of its most critical areas such as healthcare and education."[4]
