LeWa OS (Chinese: 乐蛙), also called Music Frogs[1] or жабка,[2] is a third-party Android ROM produced by the Chinese company Lewa Technology. It mainly focuses on developing ROMs for 1000-renminbi (around US$126) phones .[3] As of April 2013, they have more than 2 million users,[4] and as of July 2012, they are among the Top 3 custom Android ROMs in China, together with MIUI and DianXin OS (also known as Tapas OS).[5] Lewa is also the first-ever custom Android ROM in the world that supports dual-SIM standby feature.[6] The ROM includes its own LeWa market,[7] a power save mode,[8] adjustable switches in notification bar,[9] and some other modifications that are "optimized and localized" for Chinese users. It releases new version via OTA update once a week every Friday.[10][11][12] Other than models that are officially supported, phones can also use lewa by using ROMs that are ported by others or by users themselves.[13] Some believe that it provides a user experience and design that's similar or better than iOS[14] or MIUI,[15] some commentators also point out that the ROM is simple and energy-saving.[16] However, some Chinese commentators believe that this LeWa OS consumes more battery than stock Android.[17]

LeWa's team started producing ROMs for Android (since August 2009 for Android 1.5 Cupcake) even before the LeWa company was established.[18]

Soon after LeWa's technology was established in Shanghai at April 2011, by June 2011 it had received 20 million Reminbi angel investment from Green Pine Capital Partners (also the Round A investor of, coship and some other companies)[19] and released its first official release in October 2011, and it released its first Open Build version that publicized some of its source code and provided compile tool for the public in June 2012.[20]

During early July 2012, it received 50 million renminbi (~7/9 million USD) funding from Tencent,[5][21] and LeWa started deeply integrating Tencent's mobile manager into their ROM since a month before that and provided a SDK to block spam messages base on that program in the system level.[22] Observers believe this investment is part of Tencent's strategy to enter the ROM-flashing market.[23]

By Late July 2012, it announced the release of M+ Platform and become the first team ever to specifically made ROM for MediaTeK platform[24] Some forecasted that if this solution become mature, then people could directly get MTK's hardware and install lewa's software into it to DIY own phone.[25]

The Chinese version of Nokia X had been found to ship with LeWa OS 5 by default in early 2014.[26]

Operation mode

Unlike most other ROMs in mainland China that want to profit from their user base by embedding software or services, LeWa's major profit source is by aiding mobile phone manufacturers such as ZTE, Huawei, TCL, THL or Zopo to customize their OS.[27] And they're targeting at become the "CyanogenMod of China" or "CyanogenMod of MTK" by providing these phones with more special features and UI that match Chinese user habits.[2][20]
