Liu Yandong
Simplified Chinese 刘延东
Traditional Chinese 劉延東

Liu Yandong (Chinese: 刘延东) (born November 1945) is a Chinese politician. She is currently serving as Vice Premier of the People's Republic of China, and is a member of the Politburo of the Communist Party of China. She previously held the post of State Councilor between 2007 and 2012, and headed the United Front Work Department between 2002 and 2007.

A graduate of Tsinghua University, Liu's career has long been associated with her fellow alumnus and Communist Youth League colleage Hu Jintao. As such Chinese-language media has sometimes labelled Liu as part of the so-called "Tuanpai", or "Youth League clique". Since the retirement of Wu Yi, Liu has been the highest-ranked female political figure in China, and one of only two women with a seat on the Politburo, the other being Sun Chunlan.[1]

Early life and education

A native of Nantong, Jiangsu, Liu graduated from Tsinghua University in 1970 with a degree in chemistry. On April 13, 2009, Stony Brook University conferred upon Madame Liu Yandong an Honorary Doctor of Laws.

Political career

Between 2002 and 2007, she served as the head of the United Front, an organization that keeps non-Communist Chinese political parties in line with the general ideology of the Communist Party. Having long been an ally of Party General Secretary Hu Jintao and ascended from the ranks of the Communist Youth League, she entered the 17th Politburo of the Communist Party of China in 2007. At the 2008 National People's Congress she was elected State Councilor, and was not elected as a Vice-Premier.

At the 18th National Congress of the Communist Party of China in 2012, she was elected to the 18th Politburo of the Communist Party of China. A few months later, at the first plenary session of the 12th National People's Congress in 2013, she was also appointed second vice premier in Li Keqianq's cabinet, overseeing health, education, and sports.

In 2015, Liu became leader of the Leading Group on Football Reform, a policy coordination body aimed at improving football (soccer) in China.
