Founded in 1900, the [2] Murugappa Group[3] is one of India's leading business conglomerates, founded, managed, and largely owned by the Murugappa family. The group has 28 businesses including eleven listed companies actively traded in NSE & BSE. In May 2015, Indian market regulator SEBI charged its Chairman A.Vellayan in an Insider Trading Case related to the acquisition of Sabero Organics in 2011.[4] Following this, Mr.Vellayan stepped aside as the Chairman of the Group, until the matter is resolved.[5]


1901 - 1910

  • The foundation for this group was laid by Dewan Bahadur A M Murugappa Chettiar who established a money-lending and banking business in 1900.[6]
  • The business was first set up in Burma (now Myanmar) and then spread to Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Indonesia and Vietnam.
