REN21, the Renewable Energy Policy Network for the 21st Century, is a global renewable energy policy network that provides international leadership for the rapid transition to renewable energy. The network was launched in June 2005 as an outcome of the International Conference for Renewable Energies in Bonn, Germany. Like the Bonn Conference, REN21 distinguishes itself through its flexible nature and multi-stakeholder participation, which provides a dynamic alternative to the official international fora.

REN21 convenes a wide range of actors including government, international organisations, industry associations, science and academia and civil society. It facilitates knowledge exchange, policy development and supports joint action towards a rapid, global transition to renewable energy. REN21 also collaborates with intergovernmental organisations such as UNEP, the IEA, ADB, the World Bank and IRENA.

Neither the website ( nor the flyer downloadable from the website disclose the source of REN21 funds, although appropriate private sector sponsorship of events is accepted according to the membership application form.

REN21 has produced a number of internationally recognised reports on renewable energy policy and the development of the renewables market place. Since 2005 it has produced an annual Renewables Global Status Report (GSR), The GSR provides a comprehensive overview of renewable energy market, industry, investment and policy development worldwide. Data is collected from a network of more than 500 contributors and researchers. REN21 also produces regional analyses; its most recent report is on the Middle East and North Africa (MENA). The range of credible possibilities on the future of renewable energy is detailed in the publication Renewables Global Futures Report.

REN21 works in cooperation with other organisations. A sister report to REN21’s GSR is the Global Trends in Renewable Energy Investment Report (GTR) produced by the Frankfurt School – UNEP Collaborating Centre for Climate & Sustainable Energy Finance. REN21 is also a partner of the Global Tracking Framework, which is convened by the UN Secretary General’s Sustainable Energy for All (SE4ALL) Initiative. REN21 is also responsible for coordinating the biennial International Renewable Energy Conference. The 2013 conference (ADIREC) was held in Abu Dhabi. The 2015 IREC will be in South Africa.

The REN21 secretariat is based in Paris, France and is a registered non-profit association under German law (e.V.).
